Fire Alarms

FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS
Fire alarm systems require periodic checks by a competent person in accordance with the recommendations of BS5839-6:2013 or BS5839-1:2017 depending on the premises. The prime reason for the visit by the service engineer is to ensure that the system is working correctly to minimise failure and false alarms. It is also a recommended that a competent engineer (bfpsa British fire protection associated qualified) services the equipment. The frequency of visits will typically be between three and six months subject to agreement between all interested parties and a risk assessment.
LEGISLATION
The Management of Health and Safety at Work and Fire Precautions (Workplace) (Amendment) Regulations 2003 now requires that all fire safety equipment be properly checked and maintained by a competent person.

BRITISH STANDARDS
  • BS 5839 part 1:2017 covers the code of practice for the design, installation and servicing of the fire detection and alarm systems for buildings.
  • After the completion of the installation a "handover" certificate is issued to the client along with separate certificates for the design, installation, commissioning and acceptance.
  • Service intervals should be no greater than six months, ideally the frequency of service visits be decided as result of a risk assessment.
